Tiger Track Team Outpaces Moors

The start of the track season witnesses South Pasadena dominate Alhambra.

South Pasadena  began its 2011 track season with a romp over visiting Alhambra. The defending Rio Hondo league champs had some excellent performances in both the running and field events.

Coach P.J. Hernandez  said he was pleased with his team's competiveness Thursday, especially the freshmen. Hernandez, who was Rio Hondo coach of the year, was bolstered by his newest team members as well as  returning squad members such as state distance running champion Sam Pons. The Tigers dominated almost every event, and are again  the favorite to repeat for the crown.

The star of the meet was cross country champion Anika Renken, who won all three events she entered: the 1600, 3200 and a leg for the victorious 4x400 relay team. Pons ran an eased-up 3200-meter race,  allowing teammate John Weiner to edge him at the tape.
