Prep Basketball: Tigers-Wildcats Matchup Highlights Week

South Pasadena and Monrovia girls basketball squads could face off for RHL title.

It’s the final week of the prep basketball regular season, and yet there’s a shortage of drama when it comes to the races for Rio Hondo and Pacific League titles. The Pasadena and La Cañada boys teams have locked up first place in their respective leagues, and Burroughs will finish atop the Pacific League girls basketball standings.

At least there’s a marquee girls hoops matchup in the Rio Hondo League to salvage the week. In their Thursday regular season finale, Monrovia and South Pasadena face off at at 5:15 p.m. in a game that likely will determine the league champion.

The Wildcats are undefeated in league play at 8-0 and currently sit alone in first place thanks to a 57-37 win at South Pasadena on Jan. 21. Monrovia has won 10 in a row, and all of the Wildcats’ league wins have been by at least 10 points.

South Pasadena (7-1 in the RHL) hasn’t demonstrated the same level of dominance as the Wildcats, but the Tigers have shown a knack for coming through in close games. The Tigers’ past three games (all wins) have all been decided by three points or less.

Monrovia travels to La Cañada on Tuesday, and South Pasadena hosts Temple City.

While the Wildcats-Tigers matchup is the only game with a potential league title on the line, there are a number of games around the area with playoff implications.

  • The La Cañada girls basketball team faces Blair on Thursday in a game that could determine third place in the Rio Hondo League if Blair slips up against San Marino on Tuesday.
  • On the boys side, there’s currently a three-way tie for second place in the RHL between Temple City, Blair and Monrovia, who all sit at 4-4 in league. The Wildcats close their season at La Cañada on Tuesday night and home against South Pasadena on Thursday.
  • Pasadena and Muir face off in a game that likely won’t affect either squad’s standing in the Pacific League, but the rivalry game is still appointment viewing based on the Bulldogs’ 54-51 win at Muir earlier this season. Deshawn Hayes and the Mustangs will look to hand the Bulldogs their first league loss of the season at 5 p.m. Thursday.
