Author Night on 8/29 at South Pasadena Library with Marjorie Lord & "make Room for Daddy"

Marjorie Lord, the redheaded actress who became a household name for her role as Kathy "Clancy" Williams on the "Make Room for Daddy" television series, will make a special Library Author Night appearance on Thursday, August 29 at 7:00 p.m. in the Community Room. Marjorie will be discussing her 2013 memoir, "A Dance and a Hug." Two classic episodes of "Make Room for Daddy" handpicked by Marjorie will also be screened: “The Honeymoon” and “Family Ties,” both from 1958.  A Q & A with the actress will follow.

“Make Room for Daddy” with Danny Thomas aired on network television from 1953 to 1964 and was one of the highest rated television shows in the country for many years. Re-runs have shown frequently on “Nick at Nite” and “TV Land” and DVD box sets have been released. Marjorie also starred in “Make Room for Granddaddy,” a spinoff series during1970 and 1971.  She’s also appeared in more than 30 motion pictures, including "Sherlock Holmes in Washington" with Basil Rathbone and "Johnny Come Lately" with James Cagney.  Marjorie also made guest appearances in dozens of TV shows including “Love Boat,” “Fantasy Island,” and “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour.”

Not wanting to be typecast by the stereotypical roles which were increasingly being offered to her in the 1970s, Marjorie decided to return to her first love, the theatre. After two Broadway plays, she toured the country in various hit shows. Then, as dinner theatres were becoming popular, she was not only asked to act in plays, but to direct them as well.  She took the helm for a wide variety of long-running productions including “Forty Carrots,” “Finishing Touches,” and “Mary Mary.” In recent years Marjorie has been active with charity work and has served on the boards of the Joffrey Ballet; The Muses, a group supporting the Museum of Science and Industry; and the Friends of the USC Library.
