Blog: Check out Elliott Caine During South Pas' Eclectic Music Festival

Elliott Caine is resident of South Pasadena who lives only a few blocks from the Library. He’s also an optometrist with an office in nearby Highland Park.  Those who only know him as a neighbor or a doctor may be surprised to learn of his prominent place in the Southern California music scene. Elliott’s music is also well known to many jazz fans around the country.

Elliott grew up in Indianapolis, Indiana, and studied with the renowned David Baker while a student at Indiana University. In Indianapolis, Elliott performed with the Jimmy Coe Big Band, which also featured Ermin Hubbard, brother of Freddie.
After moving to California, Elliott has played with Teddy Edwards, Ernie
Andrews, O.C. Smith, The Machito Orchestra, El Vez, Beck, The Beastie
Boys, Tierra and many others.  Elliott was also part of the orchestra
featured at the LA House of Blues presentation, "Andy Kaufman: Dead or
Alive?"

Elliott’s current Quintet/Sextet was inspired by '60's "Blue Note" style jazz, as well
as by Tito Puente and Mongo Santamaria. His groups play original compositions,
as well as the works of Lee Morgan, Hank Mobley, Donald Byrd, and many other
jazz immortals. During the last decade their critically acclaimed albums have
been accorded strong radio airplay on jazz stations across the USA. They have
likewise received many positive reviews, including in Jazz Times, Latin
Beat, All About Jazz, LA Jazz Scene, and a host of others.

Two of Elliott's original compositions were used in the Los Angeles Theatre Center's production of the Tony Award winning play "Sideman" at the Skirball Center. Elliott's playing was also utilized for the LATC production of "Look
Back in Anger" in 2012. Both productions were broadcast nationally on NPR. Besides several "live" television appearances ("Good Day LA", etc.), Elliott's music has been used for quite a few television shows, including "Late Night with David Letterman", "Oprah",  "History Detectives" as well as for programs
on The Travel Channel, E!, The Discovery Channel, Bravo, VH1, MTV, and
many others.  

Elliott and his various groups have also been featured at a wide range concerts for the Playboy Jazz Festival, Occidental College, LA County Museum of Art, KKJZ Summer Jazz Series, Descanso Gardens Summer Jazz Series, and the Huntington Library & Gardens Summer Series.

The doors of the Library ‘Carnegie Stage’ concert will open at 3:45 p.m. and lead off with the LA Clarinet Choir at 4:00 p.m. At 5:15 p.m. GRAMMY®-winning composer, pianist, and singer John Proulx, who also resides in South Pasadena, will perform a jazz set. Pianist David Batt, who has recorded a total of 4 CDs, will follow at 6:15 p.m. Dave Alvin will play an acoustic set at 8:15 p.m. Dave is a Grammy® winning singer/instrumentalist who was awarded  a GRAMMY® in 2001 for “Best Traditional Folk Album” for “Public Domain: Songs from the Wild Land.”  He has performed live to enthusiastic audiences in 48 states.

The Carnegie Stage,’ one of the premier showcases of the 5th Annual South Pasadena Eclectic Music Festival is located in the Library’s beautiful, historic Community Room at 1115 El Centro Street. Free public parking is available in the South Pasadena Unified School District lot at 1020 El Centro Street (enter via Fairview Avenue). Doors will open at 3:45 p.m. No tickets or reservations are necessary, but seating is limited. Refreshments will be provided.
