Patch Blog: L.A. Noir Comes to South Pas

Come out for South Pasadena's first hometown celebration of the legendary William Holden.

The library will host two events honoring South Pas High School graduates as a part of L.A. Poetry Festival's “Night & the City: LA Noir.”

William Holden Tribute Nov. 5

South Pasadena High School graduate and Golden Age leading actor William Holden is arguably the most famous person from South Pasadena. His tremendous acting legacy will be celebrated and honored with a free screening of “Union Station,” a 1950 noir thriller filmed almost entirely at Union Station in Los Angeles, 7 p.m. Saturday Nov. 5.

Actress and author Stefanie Powers will offer a special tribute to Holden and L.A. author and Historian Tom Zimmerman will introduce the film. 

The event is presented by the , the and the with the support of Angel City Press, Jones Coffee Roasters, Sisters in Crime LA, and Refreshments will be served and no tickets or reservations are necessary. Doors will open at 6:30. For the “Union Station” screening, free parking will be available in the School District lot at 1020 El Centro St.

Author Naomi Hirahara Nov. 3

South Pasadena High School graduate and nationally-known Edgar Allan Poe Award-winning mystery writer Naomi Hirahara will be featured in a free Author Night program 7 p.m. Nov. 3 at 

Doc & Renee, a wonderful father/daughter musical duo, will open the show with torchy ballads from the 40s.

The program is presented by the  South Pasadena Public Library, the Friends of the South Pasadena Public Library, the , and the J-Pal Club, a bilingual Japanese-American Cultural Organization.

The event is also co-sponsored by Sisters in Crime LA and Poets and Writers, Inc.with financial support from the James Irvine Foundation. No tickets or reservations are necessary and refreshments will be served. The Community Room is located at 1115 El Centro Street. Doors open at 6:30.

Autographed copies of the authors’ books will be available for purchase at both events. Tom Zimmerman’s ‘Neon Noir’ photography exhibit will be on display both nights.
