The life of Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) was characterized by dramatic personal highs and lows, including a series of exhilarating successes and heartbreaking losses, not to mention a string of crushing breakdowns and  triumphant comebacks. Through it all, Poe created some of the finest literature the world has known. Although he’s best known for his stories and poems, Poe also invented both the psychological thriller --and the detective story (!) Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who later authored the Sherlock Holmes tales, said Poe “was a model for all time.” Poe is probably best remembered today as a writer of horror stories, but they comprise only a small portion of his works. Poe is probably so closely identified with horror because he was the first to perfect the genre --and so many writers have imitated or been indelibly influenced by him. That lengthy list includes none other than Ray Bradbury who said that as a boy he started writing by trying to imitate Poe.

The Community Room is located at 1115 El Centro Street. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. No tickets or reservations are necessary. Refreshments will be served.
