Ian Ruskin Portrays Tom Paine, Founding Father and Author of "Common Sense," at Library on Oct. 17 at 7:00 p.m.

The eloquence and passion of Founding Father Thomas Paine will be on full display with Ian Ruskin’s vivid portrayal in the Community Room on October 17 at 7 p.m. The free, one-man play, “To Begin the World Over Again: The Life of Thomas Paine,” will showcase writer-actor Ruskin’s capturing of the brilliance and contradictions of the fiery patriot who helped shape our national character.

Today, Thomas Paine still inspires us to be better guardians of our democratic legacy. Thomas Paine based his beliefs on one simple yet powerful idea: “justice for all.” His timeless “Common Sense” sold hundreds of thousands of copies when the U.S. population was only two million. The book was, literally, the spark that ignited the American Revolution. It remains in print today over 200 years later.

Ian Ruskin trained as an actor in London at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. He then worked for 15 years in English repertory companies, television and film. Some of Ian’s highlights include “King Lear” for Granada Television, playing “Jack the Ripper” at the Players Theatre in London, and starring in “The Man Himself,” at Stages Theater in Hollywood which was selected “Critics Choice” in the Los Angeles Times, LA Weekly, and other publications. Arriving in Los Angeles in 1985, Ian took on guest star roles, usually playing “the intelligent bad guy,” in shows such as “Murder, She Wrote,” “Scarecrow and Mrs. King,” and “MacGyver.”
