Stories from Famed Masumoto Organic Peach Farm Presented at Library on July 18

On  Thursday, July 18th at 6:00 p.m. the South Pasadena Public Library, the Friends of the South Pasadena Public Library, South Pasadena Chamber of Commerce and Bissell House Bed & Breakfast proudly present a cookbook reading & performance in the Library Park outside the Community Room on El Centro Street. The presentation/performance will be given by mother and daughter duo, Marcy and Nikiko Masumoto, co-authors along with David Mas Masumoto of “The Perfect Peach: Recipes and Stories from the Masumoto Family Farm” just published by Ten Speed Press. The Perfect Peach” has been called a “story-cookbook” and it’s filled with 50 peach recipes and more than 20 essays providing the fascinating, juicy back story of peaches, family farming, and eating. During their dynamic reading and performance, Marcy and Nikiko will share their insights and give a taste of their love and life of peaches. At press time some details of the event are still being finalized but, peach crop permitting, Marcy and Nikiko may be joined by another member of their illustrious family.

The Masumoto Family Farm is an 80-acre organic farm in Del Rey, California.  Both the Masumoto name and family farm first became well known to the American public when “Epitaph for a Peach: Four Seasons on My Family Farm” became a bestseller in 1995 and won the Julia Child Cookbook Award in the Literary Food Writing category. Since then David Mas Masumoto has penned many other popular books including “Harvest Son,” “Four Seasons in Five Senses” and “Heirlooms.” Feature articles about Mr. Masumoto have appeared in the Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, Time Magazine, and the New York Times. David Mas Masumoto is closely associated with the urban farmers’ market movement and has been called a “rock star of the organic foods movement.”  Mr. Masumoto has also earned the title “America’s Literary Farmer.” The Masumoto Farm has been featured in Sunset, Country Living, and Glamour magazine, on television as part of the “California Heartland” PBS series, as well as on the nationally-aired program “Ripe for Change.”

The event will open with a dynamic performance by Kyodo Taiko. The drum troupe was founded in 1990 by Mark Honda under UCLA's Nikkei Student Union, establishing the nation's first collegiate taiko team. The team is comprised of full-time undergraduate students from UCLA. In Japanese, "kyodo" means both "family" and "loud children." Throughout their history, they have strived to convey this sense of family and passion in their performances."

No tickets or reservations are necessary for the free public program.  Seats are very limited and lawn chairs and blankets are highly recommended.  “The Perfect Peach” and other Masumoto books will be available for purchase at the event. Refreshments will be provided. Special thanks to the South Pasadena Farmer’s Market and South Pasadena Community Services.
