Lunch with the Rotary Club

I recently dropped in at the Rotary Club's weekly meeting. Here's what I learned.

Buzz of the  filled the room as 30 locals gathered in  for their weekly meeting Jan. 3.

"What distinguishes South Pas Rotary is the genuine camaraderie and friendship this small club enjoys," said member Richard Larkin, who lives in Claremont.

"We also get more done and raise more money for the community per member than just about any organization in town," he told me.

From the annual Chili Cook-Off to July 4 fireworks show, Rotary is responsible for a slew of both fun and charitable events in town.

But the group doesn't just support local initiatives. Rotary International has a global campaign to fight polio—having raised about $200 million towards eradicating the disease thus far.

Hence the polio pig—a bank they pass around at lunch every Tuesday to collect donations.

"To a great extent, Rotary has been instrumental in eliminating polio," said President Dan Evans. "And when you see this pig flying around, this is for the purpose of raising funds to add to the polio campaign."

"This may seem like light donations, but we will raise anywhere from $150 to $160 a week to contribute to the polio campaign, which begins to add up."
