Patch Hosts Its First Food Drive

South Pasadena Patch is kicking of its food drive Black Friday; all proceeds will go towards Door of Hope in Pasadena and Holy Family Giving Bank in South Pas.

The holidays are a special time for many of us as we reunite with loved ones and treat ourselves to delicious foods.

But not everyone is as fortunate.

Executive Director of Door of Hope, Tim Peters, says the holidays are a hard time for many of the homeless families he sees come through the transitional home in Pasadena.

"... The depression, the brokenness, the stuff that comes out during the holidays, is actually really hard for families," he explains.

South Pasadena Patch is kicking off a food drive on Black Friday to help support Door of Hope, as well as Holy Family Giving Bank in South Pas.

with Thanksgiving dinners thanks to local donations this past Monday. Yet while that may seem like a lot of food, both Door of Hope and Holy Family say donations have been down due to the fickle economy.

"We kind of live month to month, so we rely very heavily on our private donors—especially during the holidays," said Peters. "Now is a time we need it more than ever."

How YOU Can Help

is requesting the following food items: pasta, canned or powdered milk, cereal, canned soup, canned tuna, canned vegetables and dried fruit and nuts.

Door of Hope is requesting the following food items: dry and non-perishable canned foods including pasta, tuna, rice, soups, vegetable oil, spaghetti sauce and canned vegetables. (Gift cards to grocery stores are also appreciated.)

Other items useful to Door of Hope include: Paper goods like paper towels, plates, napkins and toilet paper; and cooking items like pots and pans, cooking sheets and crock pots.

Patch food drive bins will be set up at the following locations around town (maybe more, stay tuned) starting Friday:

And join us next month at our food drive kick-off event in conjunction with a Holiday Hair and Fashion Show 5 to 8 p.m. Dec. 3 at and .
