Relay for Life Team Awarded for Raising $5,864

"City Lights" was recognized at the City council meeting Wednesday night.

Local resident Lilian Torres was recognized last week for heading City Lights, a team that raised $5,864 .

City Lights' fundraising efforts represent 10 percent of the overall $59,642 collected in South Pasadena's relay this year.

Event Chair David Melford along with American Cancer Society Manager Andrew Dean presented Torres with the award at Wednesday's City council meeting.

About 27 teams, both old and new, came out this year, according to Melford. Jim Hodge, co-founder of the South Pas Relay, helped open the event with a touching speech about Dick Richards, the visionary behind Relay For Life who died of prostate cancer in 2006.

Next year's local Relay for Life is slated for April 28 and 29. To learn more about being a part of the planning committee, join them July 23 at from 9 to 11:00 a.m.
