What Motivates City Council Candidates to Run in the November Elections?

Two incumbents and their two challengers appear before a candidates' forum sponsored by the South Pasadena Chamber of Commerce.

"It's in my blood."
"Because I have the time and experience."
"I'm running for council, like all of us are, because we love this city."
"I'm running to continue the good things we began when I was first elected."

Here's a fun exercise: Without at first watching the attached video, can you match the quotes above with the four contenders for the Nov. 5 elections to the South Pasadena City Council?

The contestants included City Council incumbents Michael Cacciotti and Philip Putnam, and their challengers: Diana Mahmud and Alan Reynolds. The four, who are vying for two seats on the council, appeared at a lively candidates' forum Tuesday night in the City Council Chambers at City Hall.

Sponsored by the South Pasadena Chamber of Commerce, this was the second in a series of candidates' forums ahead of next month's vote. The first forum, co-sponsored by the Pasadena League of Women Voters and WISPPA (Women Involved in South Pasadena Political Action), was held at City Hall on Oct. 3.

Tuesday's event featured eight key questions that each of the candidates were required to answer within a minute. (Unlike the first candidates' forum earlier this month, the candidates did not get the questions in advance.) There were also five "speed questions" requiring a one-sentence response.

Patch will be running short video clips featuring the highlights of the candidates' answers to the eight major questions.

In the video clip attached to this post, the candidates answer the first question regarding what the Chamber of Commerce summed up as their "motivation." The question: "Challengers, why are you running? Incumbents, why are you hoping to return?"
